The legend of Mariovo
A legend tells how a Turkish bey wanted to marry Marija, a beautiful girl from the region. After long negotiations she agreed to live in his seraglio, but only if he would not convert the region to Islam, settle more Turks there or build mosques. The agreement was kept and the region was spared. In gratitude to Marija, the people named it Mariovo.
