Between hiking and climbing
A via ferrata is a mountain route with a steel cable fixed along the rock. You wear a harness with two lanyards and stay clipped to the cable the whole time, so you can climb steep, exposed rock without climbing experience. Your guide shows you how it works before the start and climbs with you.
