About the canyon
Matka is a breakthrough gorge with a rich set of medieval buildings: churches, monasteries and the remains of a fortress, the medieval town of Matka. Ten caves between 20 and 176 m long and two vertical chasms up to 35 m deep cut into its limestone.
During the ice age the canyon was a refuge for plants, so about 20% of its plants are endemic or relict species, among them Natalie's ramonda. 77 species of Balkan endemic small butterflies live here.
